Today I live joyously in the "unknowable" more so than at any other time in my life.
How does a licensed professional counselor, life coach, writer, and technologist live in one brain? It conjures the image of a four-headed mythological creature. Trust me when I say that my curiosity cup has never been large enough for my spectrum of interests.
For years, I lived the backstory that I was "career-attention-deficit" and my approach to work was seriously flawed. Years of negative self-talk tried its hardest to squeeze the joy from my inner compass, which insisted I live a life of meaning and variety. What a blessing that my inner compass never ceased pointing me in new directions. The clash between my limiting beliefs and destinies kept me working two+ jobs (yes, at the same time) or one job and two back-to-back masters degrees (Theology and Mental Health Counseling). The jobs that made money and the special interests that filled my bookshelves. These big efforts left me feeling productive, but rarely satisfied. My own life coaches helped me to squelch these limiting stories, not just in my head, but in my physical body and emotional body. Brene Brown uses the term "whole-hearted" as the antidote for shame. The sort of "whole-hearted" change I went through was a series of "metamorphoses" spurred by several cataclysmic events. It took longer than I care to admit. During this time, I wrote a new story that "I am spiritual seeker, life-long learner, and scientist, who loves to apply everything I've learned" (this is the technologist in me). Hindsight avails me perspective in understanding the purposeful "switchbacks" of my journey. My criss-crossed network of trails have intersected into someone who loves to walk beside others as they learn to navigate around the boulders in their path, hear the messages of their inner compasses, and be their own mapmakers for sustainable change in their lives—one step at a time. There is much power that we give away without realizing it and much power that is restored when we gather our stories, nurture them, and give them a voice. Bearing witness to your power-recovery experiences and sharing the trail with you for awhile is very meaningful to me.
